Lime Tree Class Curriculum Newsletter

Summer Term 2014

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back to the summer term. It’s hard to believe we are in the final term of the year already!

For the first part of the term, we will be finishing out topic on ‘electricity’. The children will be making a simple switch to add to a circuit this week and then will design a model that they will add a circuit to. This could be a room made out of a shoe box with a light, a door with a doorbell or a lego vehicle with a motor. If you could send in any boxes, especially shoe boxes, this would be very helpful.

After this, we will be doing a much more cross curricular topic on ‘Buildings’ (structures):

In Art, we’ll be finding out:

  • How to draw pictures of local buildings

  • How to make and decorate models of buildings

  • How to make prints

In History, we’ll be finding out:

  • How buildings were made in the past

  • How buildings have been used in the past

  • How people travelled in the past

In Geography, we’ll be finding out:

  • About different houses, homes and other buildings around the world

  • How to use maps and atlases to locate the different countries these buildings are in

In Music, we’ll be finding out:

  • About the structures of tunes and songs

  • About comparing our own music

In PE, we’ll be finding out:

  • About different ways to balance

  • About making shapes with our bodies

In Technology, we’ll be finding out:

  • How to make picture frames

  • How to make models of houses

In Science, we’ll be finding out:

  • How to test the strengths of structures

  • About materials used in structures

As part of this, we will be taking several walks around the village, looking at different houses so we will be asking for helpers to come with us, nearer the time!

Over the term the children will be studying both the Christian and Jewish  faiths. They will be focusing particularly on how each faith prays and where they pray.

PE will take place on Mondays with our Premier Sport coach and on Tuesday afternoons. Please ensure that your child has their (named) PE kit in school each day.

Our collective worship value for this half term is ‘service’. We will be focussing on this area in assemblies and also other curriculum areas. Our class assembly is on 11th July 2014.

Homework will continue to be sent home each Wednesday and should be returned on or by the following Monday. Spellings will go home on Monday and be tested on Friday.

Reading is a very important life skill that is really encouraged in school  and particularly in Lime Class. To make sure that your child continues to make good progress they will be  heard regularly at school by an adult, either individually or as a part of a group.  However, it is still very important that you child is heard at home daily  with an adult  and please could this be recorded into their reading diary.

Please make sure your child has their reading book and record in school each day. If they need their book changing, they need to tell their teacher, preferably at the start of the day.

End of KS1 SATs

Children at the end of Year 2 are assessed in English, Maths and Science and these results are collected by both the DFE and local authority. These assessments are based on the teachers’ judgements but it is statutory that the children also take a written test or task in reading, writing and maths at some point which are used to inform the teachers’ assessments. These will take place over the next few weeks. We will keep it very low-key for the children and talk about them doing, for example, ‘a special maths booklet’ rather than saying they are doing a SATs test! From past experience the children really enjoy these activities. If you would like to see any of the papers or have any questions, please talk to one of us.

Thank you for your continued support.

Yours faithfully,

Vicky Doherty and Jo Pratt
