Autumn Term 2013 - Newsletter 1

5th September 2013

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back to the new school year! There have been lots of changes over the summer with three of the four classes moving classrooms - a huge amount of work for staff! Building work to integrate the School House with the rest of the school has also been completed. We are delighted with the results and the impact it will have on the school.

Summer Working Parties

We need to say a huge thank you to all the parents who helped at the working parties in the holidays. In very hot conditions they put in hours of work doing all sorts from dismantling an old playhouse to moving furniture, organising resources and gardening.

One of the tasks was to paint the fence around the School House garden. This is proving to be an epic task with several coats of paint needed and is not yet finished. If anyone would like to volunteer an hour or so to pop in and paint some of it at any point (including evenings and weekends), we would be very grateful. Please speak to me or any member of staff if this is something you could do.

New parents’ coffee afternoon

We are delighted to welcome the children who have joined the school this term and their families. Eight children have started in Reception and another three children have joined in other years, putting our total number up to 74.

To welcome their families properly, the Friends are organising an Afternoon Tea at 2.30pm on Friday 13th September in the Village Hall. If you are new to the school, please do come along and say hello and meet other parents.

Class Meetings

These are a valuable opportunity for teachers to discuss routines, expectations and ways that you can support your child’s learning. You will also have a chance to ask any questions and have an informal chat about your child if you would like to. Willow Class’s meeting will be slightly longer and include a brief session for parents on how they can support their child with phonics and reading.

These will take place straight after school on the following days and (apart from Willow Tree Class) will only last 10 minutes or so:

Chestnut Tree Class - Thursday 12th September

Sycamore Tree Class - Monday 16th September

Willow Tree Class - Tuesday 17th September

Lime Tree Class - Wednesday 18th September

Parents’ Assemblies

We are changing the way we do the assemblies that parents are invited to this year. Instead of whole school Share Assemblies, we will be having individual class assemblies that the parents (and grandparents, aunts and uncles etc) of children in each class will be invited to in turn. Each class will do an assembly a term. All parents are warmly invited regardless of the class leading the assembly. The first ones for each class will be on these dates:

Chestnut Tree Class - Thursday 24th October, 9am

Willow & Lime Tree Classes - Friday 15th November, 9am

Sycamore Tree Class - Friday 29th November, 9am

As ever, we would appreciate your feedback on what you think of the new format after the event.

Pencil Cases

We are going to ask that children do not bring pencil cases into school. We will provide them with all the equipment they need and find that when children bring in their own equipment things get lost and disputes can take place.

School Bags

At the end of last term we noticed a growing trend for children (particularly the older ones) to bring large bags to school. They are difficult to store. A book bag or book bag sized bag and a separate PE bag should be big enough for all the things your child requires.

Naming belongings

At the end of term, we had a huge mountain of lost property that we had to dispose of. Please make sure all belongings, especially sweatshirts are named. We will be doing a ‘name-label check’ on 20th September and children whose sweatshirts and PE kits are not named will get a letter home!

PE kit

A reminder that children need a PE kit in school. We are hoping to build up a stock of spare kit that children can borrow if they do forget so this does not prevent them from taking part in PE lessons. If you have old plimsolls that you could send in for us to add to this, we would be very grateful.

Long Hair

Please make sure that long hair is tied back everyday for school. This stops it getting in the way when children are learning and playing and helps prevent the spread of headlice.

Photo permission

All children will also be bringing home a photograph permission letter this week. Although parents sign this when their child starts school, we are finding that there are all sorts of anomalies and confusions with siblings with different permissions etc. so are asking everyone to review their choices.

We use photographs a great deal in school these days to record children’s learning and for assessment purposes. It makes things very difficult if parents do not let us take photographs at all. Please bear this in mind when you complete the form.

Home School Agreement

Each child will be taking home a paper copy of our Home School Agreement. This is a really important document that outlines how we will work in partnership with each other to make your child’s time at the school as successful as possible. Please take the time to read it, go through it with your child and send a signed copy back to school. This will then be copied and returned to you.

New Logo and Vision Statement

In the last newsletter, I mentioned that there would be a ceremonious unveiling of our new logo and vision statement on Friday 6th September. Unfortunately, due to technical delays this has had to be postponed.I will let you know the new date as soon as possibly.
