Autumn Term 2013 - Newsletter 2

27th September 2013

Dear Parents/Carers,

As you may have seen, both outside school and in the local press, we were delighted to receive another letter from David Laws, Schools’ Minister congratulating us on our high standards. This was based on a new measure that compares the progress of children in schools with similar intakes. This makes us one of the top 105 performing schools nationally. There are 17,000 primary schools in England, so this puts us in the top 0.6% of all schools! This is a fantastic achievement and a result of the high standard of teaching at Wetheringsett and lots of hard work from our pupils. I believe that the support we get from parents is also a crucial factor in our success and so parents should share in our success too!

Harvest Service and Lunch

The service will be in the church at 9.15am. Parents and families are warmly invited to join us.

Please can the children bring some harvest produce into school in cardboard/shoe boxes, not too heavy or big as they will need to be able to carry them down to the church themselves. These will be sold off at the end of the school day and proceeds from this together with a collection from the church service will be sent to Shelter.

There will be a special Harvest-themed Lunch on the same day for the children. This needs to be booked and paid for (still £2.20) by Monday 30th September. Menu for that day is

Suffolk Roast Pork

or Cauliflower Cheese

Roast Potatoes and Fresh Seasonal Vegetables

Fruit Crumble

Monday’s menu for that week will will be served on the Thursday.  Please fill in the slip below if your child/children would like lunch that day -  there is no need to return the slip for those who have already ordered.

As you will know, as part of our Harvest celebrations this year, we are asking the children and people living in the community to make a scarecrow and display it outside their homes in the village or to bring it to school for us to display along the bottom of the field. The children have enjoyed making some in their ‘Friday Groups’ which we have displayed around the school. They are regularly making us jump when we catch them out of the corner of our eye!

There is still plenty of time to make one. It would be wonderful if every family could make one to display.

September 2013

It was fantastic to see two new faces at our AGM last Monday evening. The Friends welcome any parents to come along to our meetings and get involved. This year we are focusing on raising money for a new outside classroom. Please tell us about any new ideas you may have for fundraising.  Your help and support is always very much appreciated. There is always a committee member around the school gate at drop off and collection times. So come and say hello or if you’re a little shy, email Sarah sarahmaundrell@hotmail.co.uk.

Class bake sale and book swap

The bake sales proved to be a great success last term and it’s thanks to all your hard work baking such delicious cakes. We would like to continue the bake sales this term. The bakes sales will normally be on the last Friday of the month so look out for email reminders. Remember, they don’t have to be homemade they can be shop brought. We have also had pizzas and eggs in the past! You can also bring along your books and swap them!

Race Night

Due to past successful race nights we are holding another one this term. This will be held 19th October 7.30pm in the village hall. There is still plenty of time to buy a horse for £2 or sponsor a race for £25. Tickets for the evening are on sale £20 family ticket , £7.50 adult, £2.50 Child. This includes a curry or ploughmans. It’s a great evening of entertainment which makes for a fun night out. So get your friends and family together and come along! If you cannot come or buy a horse we are also looking for raffle prizes. Pop them along to school or they can be given to any committee member.

Christmas Cards

By now you should have received a letter about Christmas cards. We are very thankful to Emma Wnukoski who has agreed to help the children with this seasonal project. We are sure you’ll agree that these will add a lovely personal touch to your greeting cards this Christmas. For more information please see Emma Wnukoski or Sarah Maundrell.

There have been a couple of changes to the friends committee this term. Sarah Maundrell was elected as Chair, Nigel Wright was elected and will continue to be our Treasurer and Janice Brown was elected as Secretary. We also have two named parent committee members who are Jill Davey and Annie Thomas.  Elaine  Miller Emma Morris and Tracey Sheppard also continue to be members of friends and play very active roles project managing fundraising events.  Every parent in the school automatically becomes a member of friend’s, the level of your involvement is up to you.
