Spring Term 2013 - Newsletter 1

17th January 2014

Dear Parents/Carers,

New Children

We are so pleased with how well Katie, Felix, Ruby, Oliver, Matthew, Daniel and Lucia have settled into our school. We are all really enjoying having them with us and are proud of how welcoming our children have been to them.

A huge thank you to the Friends for organising the welcome afternoon tea for their parents last week and for all the parents who came along.

Dinner Money

Please make sure that school dinners are paid for in advance. We have had several cheques returned recently. If you have had a cheque returned,  we will ask that all future payments are cash only.

Sainsbury’s Active Kids Vouchers

We will be collecting these, so please start bringing them into school.

Thank you for the mountains of bottles, wrappers, old lights etc that have been sent in. The artists, Jacquie and Heidi,  were amazed at how much we had been able to collect. As I write, the children are busy working with Jacquie and Heidi, transforming the pile of rubbish into an amazing 3D piece of art that will be displayed in the library. I can’t wait to see the finished piece!

KS2 children had a fascinating time at their visit to the recycling plant, and are apparently already telling their parents off for not recycling properly! Again, the high standard of behaviour from our children was commented on.

Philosophy for Children

Following a staff training day at the beginning of this term, we are excited to be introducing philosophy for children into every class. This will take the form of a weekly lesson where children will be encouraged to do some deep thinking about a question such as ‘What is beauty?’, ‘Is it ever okay to steal?’ or ‘Do dreams exist?’. This will often be based on a story book or other stimulus and takes a skill-based approach to support children to be critical thinkers, to reason and to build on and challenge the views of others. Research has shown that this has a significant impact on children’s ability to reason, to express their ideas, their reading comprehension and on behaviour and social relationships.

Please spread the word that the toddlers group has restarted. This will be in school on Tuesday afternoons from 1.30 - 3.00pm. All parents and children aged 0-4 are very welcome to come along for fun, play and crafts. Contact Emma Wnukoski or the school office for more details, or just turn up!

The value that we will be focussing on this half term in collective worship and throughout the school is ‘Peace’. This will encompass the need we all have to find times to be quiet and reflective as well as conflict resolution, both on a personal and global level.

Class Assemblies

We will continue to have class assemblies this term where children share what they have learnt with parents. All parents are welcome to any assembly. These are all at 9am.

Willow Tree Class - 14th February

Lime Tree Class - 31st January

Sycamore Tree Class - 21st March

Chestnut Tree Class - 7th March

Sports Relief

After Sycamore Tree’s class assembly, we will be doing a ‘Wellie Walk’ around the field to raise money for Sports Relief. More details will follow.

Parents’ Evening

There will be a parents’ evening on 11th February at 3.45 - 7pm. An appointments letter will be sent out nearer the time.

Phonics/spelling Information Evening SAVE THE DATE

Following how well received the Maths Information Evening was received last term, we will be holding a similar event with a focus on phonics and spelling on 3rd March at 6pm.

School Nurse Drop in Session

Wednesday 5th February at 9.00 p.m.- Some of our Reception children will also have their School Entry Health Screening.

Friends of Wetheringsett School

Friends of Wetheringsett Primary School Newsletter: January 2014

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back to the new term and to many new families who have joined the school.  We have lots planned for 2014, a brief outline follows below of the events pencilled in.  We welcome any comments you may have on these.  We hope you will join us in our events which aim to provide fun for the children, an opportunity to socialise for families and bring the community together – whilst at the same time raising vital  funds for the school.  Last year you helped raise over £2000 and this paid for: Selection boxes at Christmas; coach for the annual pantomime trip; school garden to be landscaped; playground equipment; nativity scene; ice creams on summer trip; crafts for Christmas and the artists which are coming in January. We also have some money set aside to fund further events.

Tuck Shop clashing with Friday Gym Club – Some children and parents have expressed disappointment that they can’t get to the stall now – We would happily put aside orders for sweets if money can be presented in an envelope on  Friday morning and we will get this done for you!

Easter Raffle - **GOT UNWANTED CHRISTMAS CHOCOLATE, BISCUITS, PRESENTS AT HOME?** We are collecting any of these for raffles we have through the year, particularly unopened, complete chocolate boxes/biscuits/sweets for our Easter raffle – any you can spare you would be great (they must be in date) – we’ll collect Easter eggs later in the term.  Go on, give the New year diet a kick start!

Coming up in the Spring….

Ø  Clothing and bric-a-brac collection – there will be a collection on 10TH February so please start collecting together any unwanted (but not ripped or unusable) clothing/ bric-a-brac/small appliances/ornaments for the collection. We get paid by weight so please think of us when you have a spring clean at home. (no books/duvets/cushions)

Ø  Friday tuck shop –ROTA OF PARENTS required please for the stall -It just involves setting up the table, serving the children and clearing away. After the initial rush we are finished by 4pm! If we get enough parents, it will probably mean volunteers only man it once a term.

Ø  Easter Disco – Friday 4 April

Ø  School Fete/Garden Party – Friday 16th May after school

Ø  Talent Show and Bar night – Saturday 28th June 6.30pm til late

Ø  School Sports evening + bar/bbq – July date tbc 6.00 – 9pm
