Summer Term 2017 - Newsletter 3

7th July 2017

Dear parents/carers,

End of Year Reports

These are going home today. Please read the letter enclosed with them which contains important information about the format of the reports. Please also ensure that you complete and return the reply slip.

Staffing and Classes Next Year

There will be a few changes to staffing from September.

Chestnut Class (Y5/6)

Mrs Sharpe will be teaching 4 days a week. Mrs Marion Gray will be teaching in Chestnut Class on a Friday. Mrs Pratt will continue as a higher level teaching assistant in the class.

Sycamore Class (Y3/4)

After starting at the school as a newly qualified teacher and a successful first two years at the Wetheringsett, Mrs Penistone is moving on to teach year 6 at Great Barton Primary School. Mrs Penistone worked at the school for many years as a TA before becoming a teacher. We wish her all the best in this new challenge. With the current pressures on teacher recruitment and little time to recruit, we have struggled to appoint a good enough replacement teacher. Therefore, from September, I will be teaching the class for the majority of the week. Mr Kevin Brown, a very experienced teacher with a great reputation, will be teaching the class on Tuesdays and alternate Mondays. We will be advertising for a permanent teacher for after Christmas early next term.

Unfortunately, the governing body have had to reduce TA hours in order balance the school’s increasingly tight budget. TA hours have been distributed according to the differing needs in the different classes and with huge regret, Mrs Farrant is being made redundant. Mrs Farrant has been a huge asset to the school in the two years she has worked here.

Sycamore Class will have some TA support from Mrs Hammond.

Lime Class (YR/1/2)

Mrs Sheeran will continue to teach the class for 3.5 days a week. Mrs Gray (who has been appointed to teach one day a week in Chestnut Class), will teach in the class for the remainder of the week for the first term. Once a teacher has been appointed for Sycamore Class, I will return to Lime Class.

Mrs Bell and Mrs Hammond will continue to support as teaching assistants in the class.

Forest School

One of the priorities identified in last term’s Ofsted report was for the school to ensure that the wider curriculum is taught effectively. One of the difficulties teachers are finding, is that it is a struggle to fit all the subjects and their curriculum requirements into the afternoons. As a result we have come to the difficult decision that the half termly Forest School afternoon will cease in KS2 from September. However, we are able to offer a weekly Forest School session as an after school club for those who are interested. There will be a small charge for this to cover costs. More details will follow soon.

Forest School will continue each week as normal for reception, year 1 and year 2.

Lost Property

Our lost property box is overflowing! There is a large amount of jumpers and cardigans in there now that children are taking them off during the day. Please make sure these are named so they can be returned to their owners. Writing names on the label with a biro is all that is needed!

The lost property will be put out at Sports Night tonight.

Staff have noticed that our usual high standards of school uniform have slipped a little over the last few weeks. Please be reminded:

  • shorts/trousers/skirts should be grey and not black

  • ‘Proper’ shoes should be worn, not trainers or canvas shoes

  • socks should be black, white or grey

  • from September, boots will not be permitted (these are cumbersome and uncomfortable when children are sitting crossed-legged)

  • hairstyles should be sensible without too much gel

Spare PE Kit

Our school stocks have diminished over the year and have almost disappeared! Please check at home for any items that your child may have borrowed. These are labelled ‘SCHOOL’.

We would be very grateful for any donations of old PE kit that your child may have outgrown that we could use as spares, including plimsolls.

Key Stage 2 Assembly

This term, KS2 children have been learning about Bastille Day in their French lessons. Parents are invited to join us for a special celebratory assembly at 9am next Friday (14th July).
