Willow Tree Class Newsletter Summer Term 2014

Dear Parents,

This term Willow Tree Class will be learning about:

Literacy- Stories about fantasy worlds, Recount (Fact and Fiction) & Poems on a theme.

We will explore texts set in fantasy settings and use this as a basis for drama and writing. We will practice retelling stories and factual events in order and write with detail and structure. Finally we will explore summer themed poetry, using our topic of Flowers and Insects as inspiration.

Numeracy- Partitioning, calculating, securing number facts and shape.

We will consolidate our understanding of how to partition larger numbers into tens and units. We will then apply this understanding to solve addition and subtraction problems involving money. In this we will concentrate on writing number sentences using the correct symbols. We will also explore number facts including doubles, halves and quarters and finally we will sort shapes in different ways, according to their properties.

Our main topic this term will be “Flowers and Insects”, in Science we will explore growth and habitats, making use of our outdoor area to plant and care for different flowers and conduct investigations. In Geography we will learn about weather and climate changes that affect plant growth and the conditions different plants survive in. In Art we will explore artists’ representations of the natural world and use some of their ideas to create our own art work. In P.S.H.E and R.E we will learn about how both insect and human societies work together, we will explore their similarities and differences and also the role leaders play in them. In Music (taught by Mrs Sharpe) we will learn about pieces of music associated with flowers and insects and how the musicians create effects for different purposes. Finally, in dance we will use our imaginations to explore the growth and movement of plants and insects, to then plan and perform routines to music.

PE will be on Monday and Wednesday afternoons, please could pupils bring in their kits at the beginning of each week and we will try to ensure they come home each Friday. Please carry on reading regularly with your child/ren at home and write a quick note into their reading record so that we can keep track of their progress.

Thank you and best wishes for a sunny summer term,

Miss Hazel Sutton
